Homer's vision

While the details and indeed even the authenticity of the life of the Greek poet homer are the subject of speculation and debate among the scholars of ancient Greek literature, what is certain is the legacy of the writings attributed to him. The Epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey present legendary tales of adventure and discovery and of journeys both internal and external for the characters involved. To me, the mission of libraries is much the same, to offer the world at large and adventure and a compelling journey — one that takes place in and is only limited by the mind and imagination of the individual reader.

Homer is often referred to as the blind bard of Ionia, but his internal vision was limitless. In my sculpture Homer’s Vision the highly abstracted figure it represents stand with arms outstretched in a gesture of welcome to the library. It is also a welcome to the world of knowledge and to the limitless potential in all of us.
