American Body

Deonna Kelli Sayed debut solo show. Through eleven characters, Deonna explores her relationship with her larger body and how it intersects with her hybrid American identity. She examines the racialized history of the “ideal American body” and the American diet, wearing the hijab in the Muslim world, and her indigenous (Catawba) heritage. Through these characters, she interrogates how our bodies hold the stories of ancestors – and reflect the nation’s politics. She concludes that racial and cultural mixededness is inherent to Americanness.
